This project catalyzes the large-scale reforestation of degraded pasturelands in Brazil, transforming low-productivity cattle ranching areas into resilient, biodiverse carbon sinks. Our approach integrates two primary reforestation strategies: the active planting of diverse native species and Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR). By selecting species for their survival rates, stress tolerance, and carbon sequestration potential—including several endangered species—we ensure the creation of a high-functioning forest ecosystem. Upon the removal of cattle, the project implements rigorous maintenance protocols, including the establishment of firebreaks and the control of invasive species to ensure natural regeneration flourishes. The project maintains high standards of permanence and additionality by securing land rights through either direct property acquisition or long-term rural partnership agreements with local landowners.

How carbon is being removed

Biosphere carbon dioxide removal (CDR) harnesses the natural capacity of terrestrial and near-coastal ecosystems to absorb and store carbon for extended periods. These pathways utilize the biological processes of forests, soils, wetlands, and other ecosystems to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequester it in biomass, soil organic matter, and sediments. Approaches to biosphere CDR include Reforestation, Agroforestry, Improved Forest Management, Mangrove Restoration, Peatland Restoration, and Soil Carbon Enhancement. Biosphere pathways often provide many co-benefits around the protection and enhancement of biodiversity alongside sustainable development for local communities.
