Summary

The project, “Carbon Smart Rice Farming in India,” is implemented in accordance with the Isometric-certified protocol “Rice Methane Reduction, Version 1.0.” The project aims to reduce methane emissions from paddy cultivation across India by promoting the adoption of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) irrigation practices. Under the baseline scenario, paddy fields are continuously flooded throughout the crop duration, creating anaerobic conditions that lead to significant methane emissions. In contrast, the project activity reduces the duration of field submergence by introducing controlled irrigation cycles, thereby limiting anaerobic decomposition and associated methane generation. Participating farmers are equipped with AWD field tubes, consisting of approximately 15 cm of perforated pipe installed below the soil surface and about 10 cm extending above ground. These tubes enable farmers to monitor subsurface water levels and make informed decisions on irrigation and drainage. During non-critical growth stages, fields are allowed to dry to a specified threshold before re-irrigation, as guided by the water levels observed in the tubes. Mitti Labs, in collaboration with local implementation partners, maintains a strong on-ground presence to support farmers through regular field visits, capacity building, and continuous data collection throughout the cropping seasons.
