Summary

Big Sky Bioenergy is operating a production facility in Deer Lodge, MT that converts sawmill residue primarily from wildfire mitigation and ecosystem restoration programs, a waste byproduct that would otherwise decompose, into durable biochar using a pyrolysis reactor. The process also generates 3-5 MW of electricity, powering onsite operations with surplus exported to the grid. The biochar is applied directly to soil and mixed with organic material to produce fertilizer, improving soil quality, increasing water retention, and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizer inputs.
